Can you "steal" an idea?
I've had this random thought progression over the past few days about the value of an idea. It stemmed from me thinking about my fiction writing class and how sometimes I have a "great idea" for a story, but then I can't make a great story about it because my writing isn't good enough. Then I started thinking about the phrase "He stole my idea!" and how it really doesn't have much validity to it. Take a few "ideas": A series of books about a magical school for wizards, a bulb that can produce light without fire, the theory of relativity, hybrid cars, putting a man on the moon. Are these ideas worth anything by themselves? I just thought of an idea that we should invent a medication that can cure AIDS and cancer and cystic fibrosis at the same time. That doesn't mean I can do anything with it! The only real "ideas" that I can think of that are worth something on their own are catchy slogans, and even those need to go along with a catchy marketing campaign.

I think the real motive behind claiming someone "stole" your idea is that you couldn't do anything with it and somebody else did a much better job with it. I would probably feel upset if someone took one of my story plots and wrote a kick-ass story when I only wrote a mediocre one. But if I had the skills to write the better story in the first place, then it wouldn't matter if someone "stole my idea."

Now, if only the US Patent Office agreed with your thoughts on "Intellectual Property"

But some food for thought -- you're a research scientist, and have this Really Great Idea -- you have to do some pretty intensive manufacturing to implement it beyond a test tho; so, you shop it around a few companies, trading a percentage of your right to "ownership" to them in return for their ability to manufacture it. If there is no law to protect your ownership of your idea, there's nothing stopping the company in question to produce the whatever and no pay you a cent.

(not that I'm a big fan of intellectual property, but I'm not for tearing it all down either)

Now, Process PAtents, which is what you're really talking about, are wholly stupid and should be done away with. the EU saw the horrible nature of them and noted them out; they're what allows Amazon to patent "one-click" buying. It's not an IDEA, it's a process; there's no real technology behind it.

Also, companies can be pretty bad about patenting silly things, as this article points out: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/business/0,39020645,39210396,00.htm

Process Patents

That's silly! No, I'm not against patents or copyrights altogether. But one-click ordering? I bet at least ten people had that idea on the same day! They could patent their particular program, but not the process. That's ridiculous! Same thing with phrases of less than five words, like "fair and balanced". Something should have to be at least a few sentences before it merits a copyright. Or maybe at lest as long as a haiku . . .

i prefer to think of mental piracy as "standing on the shoulder of giants"...maybe one day i'll be a giant.

chusovitna must be nuts! i can't imagine doing gymnastics doing now, let alone in her situation, i wonder where the drive comes from...i bet economics is involved. did you hear moceanu is attempting a comeback? (of course you have). i think she hurt her achilies and is taking the rest of the year off. its funny, i knew her fiance in college, competed against him...hilarious kid, good guy.

Yeah, I think that Chusovitina is either crazy or made out of some flexible steel material, perhaps both. There could be economics involved, but who is paying her? The Uzbek government can't have much money. Does she do product endorsements? If I ever invented a product, I'd get her to endorse it!

I read about Moceanu's comeback on the IG website. I hope she pulls it off- she really should have made the Olympic team in 2000 if she hadn't gotten injured.
